When I was a little girl, my third-grade class put on a Christmas pageant. The teacher read Twas the Night before Christmas and we sang many songs about Santa. We also learned the song Do You Hear What I Hear.
I enjoyed the call and response of the song—the dramatic shifts of volume and pitch. It created a sense of size and a craning upward for revelation. But in my child’s mind, I was instantly intrigued mostly by the lyrics. This is my first memory of the desire to write something so beautiful and captivating.
Said the night wind to the little lamb.
Do you see what I see
How mysterious. The night wind spoke to a little lamb.
Said the little lamb to the Shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
How amazing. A lamb spoke to a boy.
A song, a song
High above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
How incredible. The wind sang a song with a voice like the sea.
Said the Shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know
How courageous. A little Shepherd boy spoke to a mighty king.
Listen to what I say
Listen to what I say
Sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
Christmas has a message to tell us.
But are we listening?
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
John 1:1-5

Merry Christmas 🎄
Del
Beckie, you really made me sit up and take notice as you gave your thoughts on these song lyrics. They are amazing in what they are saying, aren’t they? Yes, listening for God in this busy, chaotic season, my friend. Blessings always!
Martha, wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas! <3
Same to you!!!
Great post – thank you!
Castle, Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too!
I love this song, Beckie! It’s one of my favorite Christmas songs. Our choir is practicing it and we’ve saved it to sing the Sunday after Christmas because we want to continue to share the news of the birth of our Savior. Thanks for sharing this message.
Katherine, I pray God draws someone to church to “hear” the Christmas message your choir will sing.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Merry Christmas!
Powerful, Beckie! Oh, how I want to see God and hear what He has to say! Really hear Him!
This, “God sent a child to save the world with goodness and light.” Amen!
Amen, Karen! We will someday see Him face-to-face! Until then, we have work to do 🙂 I’m so glad we are partners in spreading the “Good News.”
