Do you hear what I hear? https://beckielindsey.com/2018/12/17/do-you-hear-what-i-hear/
When I was a little girl, my third-grade class put on a Christmas pageant. The teacher read Twas the Night before Christmas and we sang many songs about Santa. We also learned the song Do You Hear What I Hear.

I enjoyed the call and response of the song—the dramatic shifts of volume and pitch. It created a sense of size and a craning upward for revelation. But in my child’s mind, I was instantly intrigued mostly by the lyrics. This is my first memory of the desire to write something so beautiful and captivating.

Said the night wind to the little lamb.
Do you see what I see

How mysterious. The night wind spoke to a little lamb.

Said the little lamb to the Shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear

How amazing. A lamb spoke to a boy.

A song, a song
High above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea

How incredible. The wind sang a song with a voice like the sea.

Said the Shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know

How courageous. A little Shepherd boy spoke to a mighty king.

Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say
How unheard of. The king listened to the boy and declared the boy’s message to people everywhere.
Pray for peace people everywhere
Listen to what I say
How marvelous. The king commanded people everywhere to pray for peace.
The child, the child
Sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
How radically awesome! God sent a child to save the world with goodness and light.

Christmas has a message to tell us.

But are we listening?

I encourage you to take time this holiday season to be still. Look with child-like
wonder into the night sky, sparkling with stars put in place by the Lord God
Almighty.
“In the beginning, the Word already existed.
    The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
John 1:1-5
From the beginning, God has been speaking to us. He still speaks to us today.
