Are you taking Him with you to work? To school? On the road as you drive in traffic? In your mind, as you worry about financial problems? In your heart, as you long for someone who is married?

Are you taking Him with you when you engage in office gossip? Or watch that “questionable” show? When you take just a peek at porn? When you scream at your kids or fight with your spouse?

Are you taking Him with you when you serve at the homeless shelter? Give a cup of coffee to a stranger? When you lie about why you’re late? When you hug your friend or call your mother?

How about cleaning your house? Grocery shopping? Hiking or on vacation? When you’re sick? When you’re drunk? When you lose your temper? When you wake with worry in the middle of the night?

If you know Jesus—you take Him with you.

He lives within you and goes wherever you go.

So, where will you take Jesus today?

“You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14

The inspiration for this poem came from a time when I discovered that my teenage sons had been smoking with friends at the park. I approached my boys and simply said,

“So, you and Jesus had a smoke together?”

Their mouths dropped open.

I walked away.

Later, I heard that still small voice whisper to me, “Where did you take Jesus today?”

It’s something that impacted me deeply. When I invited Christ to have control of my life, His Spirit came to live within me. Whatever I think and wherever I go— He goes with me. That reality can be comforting or disturbing depending on where it is I take Him.

At times, it has rattled me to my core when I am in the middle of something that I would never want my Jesus to be a part of.

And yet, there He is. The Comforter. The Advocate. The Counselor. The Spirit of Truth.

Yes, there He is. And He will never leave me nor forsake me. His steadfast love is new every morning. Oh, how I’m grateful for His love, mercy, and grace. Oh, how the more I know Him, the more I want to be like Him.

Father, help me to grow more like Your Son who lives within me! Help me to shine His love to this dark world.

More of You, Lord. Less of me.
