Life can be downright brutal at times. Just watch the news for ten minutes if you need proof. My guess is that you don’t. We all have hard stuff we are either currently going through, or just coming out of. I don’t know about you, but one thing that helps me with the stresses of this life is laughter.
Have you ever wondered if God laughs? To be honest with you, I never really thought about it until I was in my twenties. That’s when God taught me that He most definitely has a sense of humor.
What Makes God Smile
I tucked my four year-old daughter, Charity in bed. I put away her children’s Bible and turned out the light, then knelt beside her bed, giving her a kiss. It was now time to say our prayers.
I closed my eyes and Charity began her prayer.
“Tank you, Wee-sus (Jesus) for my brothers, my cat, my mommy and daddy, and tank you Wee-sus for toots!” Then she giggled and ripped one!
My eyes popped open. I could see her big grin lit up by the moonlight that streamed in through the blinds. She giggled some more.
“Charity,” I said. “That’s not how we pray to Jesus.”
I could see her smile quickly vanish. “Oh, sorry mommy.”
I gave her another kiss and told her goodnight.
A bit later, when I was laying in bed reading my Bible, I came across this verse:
“A happy heart makes a face cheerful.” Proverbs 15:30
I thought about Charity’s smiling face in the moonlight. This is when God said to me, “I loved Charity’s prayer. It made me smile. I want you to go tell her.”
My heart stopped, thinking of how I had scolded her. I asked God to forgive me. And of course He did. He impressed upon me that the whole idea of humor came from Him. We are created in His image. We laugh because He does too. Wow!
I peeked in Charity’s room to see if she was still awake. Sure enough, she was.
“Charity, God wants me to tell you that He loved your prayer about toots. It made him smile.”
Once again, I saw a smile curve across her sweet face. “God likes toots?” She asked. “They’re stinky.”
“I guess so. He’s the one who made them, ya know.”
Charity giggled. “Yeah, God’s funny.”
To honor our creator with a little wholesome laughter, I’ve decided to start, “Friday Funnies” on this blog. I know many of you have a funny story, a joke (appropriate of course), a picture or anecdote. I’d love to hear them. Leave a reply at the bottom. Or contact me at: beckielindsey16@gmail.com
“Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
Proverbs 16:24
I love this! So funny! I can’t wait to read your other Friday Funnies. Laughter is one of my favorite things, so now I have just one more reason to look forward to Fridays. Thanks!
God certainly is humorous and creative. Some of the most moving sermons I have heard were from funny preachers! Your daughter sounds precious 🙂
Thanks! Please feel free to share with me some of your own funny stories.
Love this! It’s so true!!
This one made me smile yet cry at the memories of my own precious daughters saying bedtime prayers when they were so young and innocent. Thank you. Xxooxxoo
