Hearing the Voice of God 2

 I was sitting in the waiting room of my doctor’s office, doing what the room is intended for—waiting. I looked around and noticed several people with their phones out. I got mine out too and was about to start my usual routine of checking emails and Face Book when I remembered what I had prayed that morning. “God, I want to stay in tune with You all day long. Help me when I stray or become distracted.”

I recognized this had to be the Holy Spirit reminding me of my prayer, so I found myself stuffing my phone back in my bag. Here was an opportunity to talk to God and even sit still and listen for Him. If He was prompting me to put up the phone, could it be that He had something to say?
I had nowhere to go and nothing to do but wait. So I did. And the funny thing is, I became more aware of the other people in the room. A hunched over, older woman in line, dropped her pen. I picked it up for her. She thanked me. I sat back down and said a simple prayer for her. A young mother straddled a baby and diaper bag with a toddler in tow, while attempting to open the door to the restroom. I got up and opened the door for her. Her eyes said thank you before the words left her lips. As I walked back to my seat, I said a prayer for her too.
Before I knew it, the nurse was calling my name. I was ushered into the examining room where I waited yet some more.
“Lord, is there anything special that you wanted to say?”
“I did,” said His gentle whisper in my spirit.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:6
